Knowing what to wear in the Agafay Desert makes the difference between a comfortable, memorable experience and an uncomfortable one. The desert is warm by day and surprisingly cool by night, so layering is key.
What to Wear by Day
- Lightweight, breathable clothing (cotton or linen)
- Closed-toe shoes for camel rides and quad biking (no flip-flops on a quad)
- A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
- Sunscreen (high SPF) — the desert sun is strong year-round
What to Wear for the Evening
Evenings in Agafay get cool, even in summer. Bring a light jacket, hoodie or pashmina for the sunset dinner and fire show. In winter (December-February), a warmer jacket is essential.
Footwear Guide by Activity
- Camel ride: closed shoes or sturdy sandals with a back strap
- Quad biking: closed shoes (trainers) — required for safety
- Horse riding: closed shoes or boots, long trousers
- Pool day: swimwear, flip-flops, and a cover-up
Seasonal Packing Cheat Sheet
- Summer (Jun-Aug): light clothes, hat, sunscreen, plenty of water, light evening layer
- Spring/Autumn: layers — warm days, cool evenings
- Winter (Dec-Feb): warm layers, jacket, closed shoes, and a scarf for the wind
What NOT to Wear
- Heavy dark clothing in summer
- Flip-flops for quad biking or hiking
- Valuable jewellery — sand and activity make it easy to lose
Quick Packing Checklist
Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, closed shoes, light layer, warm evening layer, water bottle, and a camera or phone for the sunset.
